LexTran to receive funds as part of innovative “Low-No” program

8/24/2018

LEXINGTON, KY – At an event with the Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce today, U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced a $2.3 million grant to the Transit Authority of Lexington (LexTran) to purchase new battery electric buses.

“The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $2.3 million grant to improve the quality of life and access to transportation for this community,” said Secretary Chao.

The buses will add to LexTran’s successful deployment of its existing electric fleet, which has replaced older vehicles at the end of their useful life with modern, efficient models.

The award for LexTran comes as part of $84.45 million in grant selections nationwide also announced today through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s highly-competitive Low- or No-Emission Grant Program (“Low-No”). LexTran will partner with a non-profit research organization to assess the operational benefits of electric buses, which will benefit and inform the wider transit industry.

Low-No grants fund the deployment of transit buses and infrastructure that use advanced propulsion technologies. The LexTran project is one of 52 projects in 41 states that will receive funding.
