ARRA Fact Sheet: CAT Maintenance and Operations Facility

Project: Capital Area Transit (CAT) Maintenance and Operations Facility

City: Raleigh

State: North Carolina

ARRA Award Amount: $11.6 Million

Program: Non-Urbanized Area Formula

Description:

The City of Raleigh (CAT) received $11.6 million in ARRA grants to partially fund a new $22.5 million Maintenance and Operations Facility. CAT’s current facility is over 30 years old and was designed for 50 buses. It currently houses over 90 buses and support vehicles. The new facility is being constructed to support 125 vehicles with a 30-year expansion/build out to support 200 vehicles.

CAT was in need of a larger maintenance and operations facility to meet the needs of its growing service. The availability of ARRA funding allowed CAT to proceed with construction of the facility using a design-build team. The facility is on a 23-acre site and will include an administrative and operations building, maintenance building, fueling facility, bus wash, bus parking, a park-and-ride lot, and bus stop/shelter. The city intends to pursue Silver LEED accreditation for the facility, which has several sustainability features including:

  • Geothermal Heating & Cooling, Radiant Floor Heating Maintenance Bldg
  • Rainwater Collection, Water Efficient Landscaping
  • Super-Insulated, Energy Star, High Albedo, Low-E Roof System
  • Bus Wash Water Recycling

Construction is expected to be completed by April 2011.
