ARRA Fact Sheet: GTA Maintenance/Operations Facility and Administrative Offices

Project: Greensboro Transit Authority (GTA) Maintenance/Operations Facility and Administrative Offices

City: Greensboro

State: North Carolina

ARRA Award Amount: $5.45 Million

Program: Non-Urbanized Area Formula Description:

The City of Greensboro – Greensboro Transit Authority (GTA) received $5.45 million in ARRA grants to partially fund a new $15.8 million Maintenance, Operations and Administrative Facility. The new facility is desperately needed to replace an existing bus operations and maintenance facility constructed in 1969 that no longer meets the GTA's needs. The development of this new transit facility will significantly enhance the GTA's service delivery, efficiency and the quality of transit services to the more than 300,000 current and future riders in the Greensboro community.

GTA was in need of a larger facility and has been planning for this construction for several years. The availability of ARRA funding allowed GTA to move up the construction. The facility is on a 17.4 acre site and is expected to be 60,000 square feet. It will house administrative offices, a board room, operations and dispatching, maintenance facilities, and parking for 110 buses as currently configured. Bus parking can be reconfigured in the future to accommodate additional parking. GTA intends to pursue LEED accreditation for the facility, which has several sustainability features including:

  • Green Roof
  • Green Power
  • Sustainable Water Efficient Landscaping Features
  • Water Efficiency Features

Construction is expected to begin in April 2010 and completed in summer 2012.
