  • On December 3, 2024, FTA announced the availability of $5 million for FTA’s Technology Transfer (T2) research deployment program. Applications are due February 11, 2025.
    • FTA will host a webinar on December 10, 2024 at 2:00 PM ET to discuss the requirements of the funding opportunity and how to apply. Register.

Overview

FTA’s Technology Transfer (T2) program will build on successful research, innovation, and development projects funded from FTA’s Public Transportation Innovation Program (49 U.S.C. § 5312) to promote transit innovations that improve public transportation to enable transit agencies to benefit from these promising findings.

As part of its research program, FTA accelerates innovation that enhances safety, improves equitable mobility, refines transit operations, and fosters clean energy. FTA invests over $50 million a year in research and demonstration projects. In 2024, FTA managed a total research portfolio of approximately $190 million. The T2 program will help transit agencies deploy these significant investments in their operations.

It will also enhance the ability of small businesses and other entities to build upon the research and commercialize new innovations. The T2 program supports Presidential Executive Order 14104: Federal Research and Development in Support of Domestic Manufacturing and U.S. Jobs.

T2 goals include:

  • Developing processes, systems, and resources to support the deployment and adoption of FTA’s innovative research results in the public transportation industry.
  • Supporting the commercialization and production of technologies developed in the U.S., in part through FTA-funded research and development.
  • Overcoming barriers and challenges affecting the adoption of research products in transit agencies.
